14 Healthy Tips for Going Green

Posted by Melanie Trainor

Healthy eating and environmental awareness are on the rise, and restaurants are capitalizing on these popular trends by promoting nourishing and sustainable menu items.

According to National Restaurant Association research, more than 70% of U.S. adults strive to eat healthier when dining out than they did two years ago. It has also recently been determined by Nielsen that three out of every four millennials are willing to pay more for ecologically friendly products.

"Brands that establish a reputation for environmental stewardship among today's youngest consumers have an opportunity to not only grow market share, but build loyalty among the power-spending generations of tomorrow," says Grace Farraj, SVP, Public Development & Sustainability.

Take advantage of these rising trends to support wholesome eating as well as carbon and energy reduction:

  • Optimize locally sourced and/or organic food
  • Consider incorporating more vegetarian and vegan options into your menu
  • Look for GMO-free ingredients
  • Since seafood cannot be certified organic, choose other sustainable seafood options
  • Offer low-cholesterol, low-calorie, and low-carb dishes. Consumers tend to view these types of food as healthier and are willing to spend more money on them
  • Prepare food on-site when possible
  • Donate or compost leftover food
  • Align your decor with your philosophy. Natural materials, plants, water features, fresh air and natural light are images that consumers associate with green living
  • Use sustainable supplies like organic cotton napkins, real dishware, tableware and furniture from renewable woods
  • Avoid the use of disposable napkins and tableware
  • Choose suppliers that minimize packaging waste or use recycled packaging
  • Recycle whenever possible
  • Use biodegradable take-out containers
  • Consider certification through the Green Restaurant Association, Green Business Network or a similar organization

Remember to publicize your healthy-living efforts wherever possible; to ensure that eco-conscious customers are aware of your wellness commitment.
