Position: Estimator

Position Summary/Objective
Directs activities concerned with design build, design and bid contracts relative to estimating equipment, materials, products or services by performing the following duties, either personally or by delegating and overseeing completion and results. Responsible for assembling bids/cost estimates from multiple vendors who respond to RFP/quotes for food service equipment projects. 
Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Examines estimates of material, equipment and production costs, performance requirements and delivery schedules to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepares bids, process specifications, test and progress reports and other exhibits that may be required.
  • Reviews bids from other firms for conformity to contract requirements/specifications and identifies which bids are acceptable.
  • Negotiates pricing with vendors, service agencies and customers as requested.
  • Advises project teams of contractual rights and obligations.
  • Compiles data for preparing estimates.
  • Maintains contract and contractor status databases.
  • Reviews all correspondence concerning contractors and responds as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains contact with contractors to ensure the smooth working of the contract awarding process.
  • Acts as liaison between company and subcontractors.
  • Reviews data to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists.
  • Computes cost factors and prepares estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, preparing bids; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost effectiveness.
  • Prepares reports to assess standard hours and related cost information used by the project team/division to effect cost reductions.
  • Consults with clients, vendors or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Interfaces with other individuals in the organization to obtain support and commitment to the cost estimates. Organizes, enters and manages project data into a centralized cost estimating database; establishes a formal process to support cost estimating to ensure historical data is utilized.
  • Analyzes completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for any discrepancies.
  • Provides process improvement recommendations to cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.
  • Identifies cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
  • Monitor quality/timeliness of vendors and subcontractors and report issues to Management.
Competencies, Skills and Abilities
Minimum:
  • Prior, recent work experience with AutoQuotes.
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles and applications; proficient in Mathematics including calculations using percentages, fractions and/or ratios.
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative and has the ability to effectively organize, multi-task and prioritize a wide array of initiatives.
  • Strong administrative, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong work ethic and high degree of professionalism.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines and manage time.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills working with internal clients and external suppliers.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite.
Preferred:
  • Previous experience with Construction Software (i.e.: Sage, Viewpoint, SAP, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret design, CAD and BIM drawings.
  • Ability to read and analyze foodservice drawings for potential problems during construction and/or ability to provide cost savings to client.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education & Experience
Minimum:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of recent construction industry experience in California with functional responsibility for estimating with a general contractor.

 
Preferred:
  • 2 or 4 year college degree in a related field plus 5+ years of recent construction industry experience with a main focus in foodservice projects.
