Position: Designer

Position Summary/Objective
The foodservice designer is responsible for identifying sales opportunities and for establishing and maintaining professional relationships with clients to develop a strong pipeline of sales and projects year-over-year.  The designer must understand his/her clients’ vision and to translate those visions (concepts) onto paper. The designer also produces schematics (space plans), itemized equipment plans and schedules, detailed itemized, written equipment specifications, pricing and final contracts. The designer is responsible for reviewing all plans and checking shop drawings prior to final release.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Meets with clients and/or architects to establish project scope.
  • Estimates design contract fees and prepares final contract for execution after receiving required approvals.
  • Prepares layout, rough space plans and schematic plans showing the purposed equipment as related to the client menu and/or directions.
  • Establishes and reviews budgets according to the client’s and/or architect’s directions.
  • Finalizes equipment plans and specifications according to approved budget.
  • Meets with internal team, client, architect or design consultant as necessary throughout the span of the project.
  • Establishes critical time line for project deliverables (schematic phase / design development phase / construction document phase and health and building department submittals.)
  • Meets with Design Director in appointing CAD job captain/CAD Operator as new jobs are scheduled and to complete project kick-off meetings.
  • Supports CAD Operator in reviewing layout revisions.
  • Reviews quotes, internal/outsourced/manufacturer shop drawings and plans as project deliverables are issued.
  • Evaluates plans and presents suggestions for improvement.
  • Maintains communication with clients and/or architects as necessary to complete accurate plans.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the latest CAD-related technologies.
  • Has or develops working knowledge of company-specific technology used to produce and manage projects.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with general contractors, architects, design consultants and others to ensure a strong pipeline of future design projects.
  • Adheres to company’s standard operating procedures/protocols and uses preferred vendors to maximize pricing and rebates.
  • Addresses warranty and customer service issues as required.
  • Works with internal staff to expedite orders and to oversee/approve installation as necessary.
  • Coaches, trains and mentors less experienced designers and BIM/Revit/CAD Operators as appropriate.
  • Works with team to assess and establish priorities as needed to accommodate business and/or customer needs as applicable.

Competencies, Skills and Abilities

  • Current working knowledge of general construction as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and processes.
  • Ability to read, interpret and correct architectural drawings. 
  • Current, working knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; development software; design software; internet software and project management software.
  • Advanced proficiency using and ability to teach others to use:
    • AutoCAD Architecture – Most recent versions.
    • AutoCAD MEP – Most recent versions.
    • Proficient us of Microsoft Office Products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to multi-task and to work independently as a leader within the team.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of sales processes and cycle.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Outstanding organization skills to successfully and simultaneously manage multiple projects.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Architecture, Design, Engineering, Construction Management) and 8+ years’ experience with commercial kitchen CAD design projects.  Without a bachelor degree, 10+ years’ of experience with commercial kitchen CAD design projects.
  • Must have a successful history of working with designers, architects, consultants, and project managers.
  • Strong understanding of food service equipment and supply applications.
  • Understanding of restaurant and instructional kitchen flow based on menu and operational structure.
  • Familiar with codes pertinent to foodservice operations.


  • Completion of an AutoCAD training program and some hands-on working experience.
  • REVIT training and knowledge would be beneficial.
